Casinos Boost Economy
The commission issued a report Thursday that says the state's riverboat and racetrack casinos spent $879 million last year, with about $778 million staying in Iowa. The report showed Iowa's 10 gambling boats and three racetrack facilities paid about $235 million in salaries, wages and benefits. The businesses spent $182 million on equipment, supplies and services with Iowa vendors, and contributed almost $72 million to Iowa cities, counties and nonprofit groups. In addition, the casinos paid almost $289 million in taxes and fees. The report is issued annually to gauge how casinos are complying with a state law that mandates casinos make most of their purchases through Iowa companies. [gazetteonline.com]
